The movie – Alien Covenant
The movie, Alien Covenant starts out with an interstellar spaceship traveling through space with all its occupants in a state of stasis except for one. This is the male Android played by Michael Fassbender.
The ship is traveling through space on a very special mission, to save the human race by colonising a planet the at is seven years sleep away. The Androids job is to keep the ship running smoothly and to recharge the ship’s power cells by using solar sails. All is going well until the sails are damaged by a shockwave from a supernova. Not only are the sails damaged but the crew are awoken and suffer terrible injuries. Some of the multitudes of colonists die in the catastrophic event.
The Wrong Decision
The crew set about repairing the sails and also decide to see where they are and how much more sleep is needed to reach the destination planet. Discovering that there is still seven years sleep needed along with the fact that there is a planet only two weeks away that can support human life, the decision to make a detour to the planet is made in the hope that it is indeed suitable for colonisation.
The planet is rich and teeming with diverse plant life. Some of the plant life is dangerous.
So, the stage is set within the first twenty minutes or so for a gripping heart pounding movie.
Does it lose the plot?
The suspense built up in the beginning is lost as the second Android appears who was an early version and made to be very close to being a real person. He leads the landing party to a safe place the path to which takes the group through some horrible scenes of grotesque animal and human shapes.
Being idiots, no-one asks what the hell happened here!
This is the point where the movie loses all credibility for me. Needless to say, people get chomped regularly as they try to escape. There are a couple of people who get back to the ship and have to fight off a big nasty alien in the process.
There is a twist at the end which leaves it open for another movie in the future.
Personally I’d rather they didn’t bother. This movie franchise has been done once too often. This particular episode could have been done much better but unfortunately I have to conclude by saying that it was nowhere near as suspenseful or scary as the original movie.
